A coordination headed by Senator Jorge Kajuru, final rapporteur of the sports betting regulation project in the House, will maintain advertising for bets on TV, as well as sponsorship of football teams, athletes and competitions.

According to Kajuru, sports betting advertisements will not have time restrictions.

On the other hand, the demand of the Federal Government‘s opposition to accept this agreement was to preserve in the bill the prohibition of advertising on signs in stadiums. This measure has already been approved by the Sports Commission.

Voting on the betting regulation project will take place next Tuesday

However, PL 3,626 of 2023 must be voted on by the Economic Affairs Committee on the morning of Tuesday, 21st. Subsequently, the agenda will be considered in the Senate Plenary on the same day.

“It would not be possible to assess the projects scheduled for today if it were not for the initiative of the leaders with the Federal Government, and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva himself, to promote the removal of the constitutional urgency imposed on the bill”, declared the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco in a recent session.

“Thus, it [bill] must be considered on the 21st, in the morning, by the Economic Affairs Committee, and in the afternoon, by the plenary”, he added.

The bill was being processed under constitutional urgency until Tuesday, the 14th. However, the proposal was blocking the House’s agenda, preventing the analysis of other topics until it was considered.

Thus, government leaders, senators Jaques Wagner (PT-BA) and Randolfe Rodrigues (No party-AP), agreed to remove the urgency. The request was that the proposal be analyzed in the next session.

Excessive prohibitions may favor the illegal betting market

In general, bets claim that restricting advertising in sports arenas will harm sports teams. After all, marketing agencies that have already acquired or are negotiating to purchase the rights to these assets will have less demand for space. And, as a result, they will transfer fewer resources to the clubs.

Furthermore, bookmakers argue that excessive prohibition ends up encouraging illegal gambling. According to this view, without proper information about the bets that are actually authorized by the Federal Government, the bettor will not know how to differentiate them from those that operate irregularly.

It is worth saying that the regulation of online sports betting is one of the Ministry of Finance’s priorities to increase revenue in the coming years.
