A bill aims to ban sports betting on individual actions. In other words, betting on the number of yellow or red cards, fouls, corners and other individual results in sports.
According to CNN Brasil, this proposal is in the Sports Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.
Representative Ricardo Ayres (Republicanos-TO) is the author of the proposal that provides that only the final results of games and the number of goals can receive bets.
Therefore, no data that interferes with individual actions can be used as a basis for sports predictions. Therefore, bettors will only be able to establish the outcome variables of the match score.
At the beginning of this year, an investigation carried out by the Public Ministry of Goiás (MPGO) showed that a gang enticed players to receive yellow or red cards in matches in the two main divisions of the 2022 Brazilian Championship.
Operation Maximum Penalty, as it became known, also identified this match-fixing in 2023 State matches. Several athletes involved have already been punished with fines, suspensions and bans.
The Chamber of Deputies delved deeper into the issue during the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) that investigated the manipulation of results in Brazilian football.
CPI members even considered banning sports betting on individual actions. However, after four months of work, the investigations did not go ahead and the final report was not even voted on.
Processing of the bill that could veto sports betting on individual actions
To come into force, the proposal needs to go through the Sports and Constitution and Justice Committees. Subsequently, the project must be considered in the Chamber plenary, followed by Senate committees.
“We think it is important that this market develops and that there is regulation on betting”, said deputy Ricardo Ayres.
“But we cannot allow any type of fraud like the one that happened across the country. Therefore, my project goes along the path of prohibiting individual betting”, added the deputy.
