The Sports Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved a project that allows the federal public administration to suggest the suspension of a championship, or an event associated with it, when there is suspicion of match-fixing.

Authorities may also suggest removing athletes and imposing fines, among other measures.

Bill 3573/23 is from licensed deputy Júlio Cesar Ribeiro (SP) and will still be analyzed, conclusively, by the Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Commission (CCJ). The approved text changes the recently sanctioned General Sports Law.

The law already allows the federal public administration to establish partnerships with sports organizations to monitor competitions with the aim of combating match manipulation.

The rapporteur on the committee, deputy Prof. Paulo Fernando (Republicanos-DF), recommended approval of the proposal.

“The project improves legal tools so that authorities can intervene effectively, preventing and curbing any activity that seeks to distort the results of competitions,” said Fernando.

According to Agência Câmara, he presented a substitute with formal adjustments, maintaining the content of the proposal.

Match-fixing in Brazilian football

Recently, the Public Ministry of Goiás (MP-GO) carried out an extensive investigation and discovered the interference of a group of criminals in several Brazilian football games.

This investigation resulted in Operation Maximum Penalty, which discovered evidence of match manipulation in matches in Series A and B of the 2022 Brazilian Championship. In addition, the gang also arranged to interfere in this year’s state tournament games.

Punishments

According to the MP-GO, criminals enticed players to receive yellow and red cards, as well as carry out penalties in certain clashes.

Currently, countless players have already been punished by Brazil’s sports courts with fines, suspensions and even bans from football.

Furthermore, FIFA began to comply with and extend these sanctions to the entire world. In other words, the player punished in Brazil is prevented from playing for teams abroad.

Since then, the Federal Congress began to debate the issue and even promoted the CPI on sports betting. The topic continues to be in vogue due to the advancement of the online betting regulation process in the country.
