The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI), which investigates the manipulation of games and sports betting, resumes its activities this Monday (29). Thus, the meeting, scheduled for 3pm, will be attended by representatives of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

Among the guests are Hélio Santos Menezes Júnior, director of Governance and Compliance and Eduardo Gussem (Integrity officer) of the entity.

The vice-president of the CPI, senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), is the one who requested the director’s presence (REQ 39/2024). So, for Girão, it is undeniable that manipulating results is an old practice.

He argues that the CBF, as the main entity responsible for managing sports competitions, must combat this type of situation rigorously.

Therefore, Girão believes that Hélio Menezes Júnior’s testimony will be fundamental in clarifying several aspects related to the CPI’s object of investigation. Furthermore, the senator also invited Júlio Avelar, director of Competitions at CBF, to speak to the CPI.

The invitation request to Avelar (REQ 48/2024) records that 139 football matches in 2022 raised suspicions of manipulation. The previous year, 109 matches were recorded. Therefore, the suspicions involve all series of the Brazilian championship (A, B, C and D).

The CPI still intends to hear Eduardo Gussem, CBF Integrity officer. The commission’s rapporteur, senator Romário (PL-RJ), requested that Gussem be heard as a witness (REQ 41/2024).

According to Romário, the CBF has a contract with the monitoring company Sportradar and regularly receives reports about suspicious matches.

Sports Betting CPI can last up to 180 days

The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) that investigates the manipulation of games and sports betting emerged following a request from Senator Romário (RQS 158/2024).

Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) leads the commission, made up of 11 full senators and 7 substitutes. The work is expected to last 180 days.
