Brazil is emerging as one of the main players in the consumption of online betting, as shown in a study conducted by the internet data analysis company, Comscore.

According to the data collected, Brazil secured third place in this segment, just behind the United States and the United Kingdom, surpassing nations such as India and Italy.

Thus, Comscore defines the term “gambling” as encompassing several digital platforms aimed at gamblers, including segments such as sports betting, casinos and gambling.

Since 2019, the country has experienced notable growth in this sector, recording a significant increase of 281%. This growth culminated in June 2023, when the survey was carried out, with a total of 2 billion minutes consumed monthly and a base of 42.5 million unique users.

Comparatively, the United States leads with 66 million unique users, followed by the United Kingdom with 28 million. In the Brazilian context, the volume of consumption represents approximately 32% of the digital population, which totals around 131 million individuals, according to Comscore.

It is also noteworthy that the predominance of access via mobile devices is evident, with 80% of users opting for this modality, totaling more than 35 million unique users. Demographic data reveals that 49% of these users belong to class C, while 37% are from class AB.

Furthermore, there is an unequal distribution in terms of gender and age group, with 61% of users being men over the age of 45 and 39% women in the same age group.

As for the main betting portals accessed in Brazil, Betano, bet365 and Pixbet.com stand out. The survey indicated that users dedicate, on average, 53 minutes per month to betting activities on the most popular sites.

Online betting: a growing market

Interest in the segment is also evident on social media. During the period from January to April 2023, online betting sites registered a significant increase in interactions, with a total of 617,494 shares, an average of 126 shares per publication, distributed across 4,914 posts.

In parallel, a study conducted by Folha de S. Paulo, based on data from the Central Bank, revealed that Brazilians spent a considerable US$11 billion on online betting or around R$54 billion between January and November 2023.

The calculation of the total value was made taking into account remittances destined to online betting companies based outside Brazil. Among the amounts sent abroad by bettors, it is estimated that around R$34.5 billion returned to the winners as prizes.
