The Sports Committee of the German Bundestag took an important decision: it voted against the proposal to ban the sponsorship of gambling companies from sports. Experts say that this measure is crucial to maintaining the financing and development of sport in the country.
According to the entity, sponsorships are fundamental for sport in Germany. Without this financial support, many sporting events would face significant difficulties.
However, Inka Müller-Schmäh, managing director of the Association of Sports Sponsorship Providers, said a clear legal framework was needed.
She said sports sponsorship must remain possible “no matter where, when and how sport takes place or is broadcast”.
Regulations on the betting market in Germany
In addition to the sponsorship issue, Germany already faces strict regulations in the betting market. The Interstate Gaming Treaty (GlüNeuRStV) imposes several restrictions.
Among them, the ban on betting advertisements online or on television between 9pm and 6am. Partnerships with sports personalities and influencers on social media are also prohibited.
However, these regulations have led many players to look for offshore operators. In 2023, research from the University of Leipzig revealed that almost half of online gambling in Germany occurs through unlicensed operators.
Currently, the illegal market attracts players as it is more accessible and less restrictive in terms of advertising and bonuses.
Other countries, such as the Netherlands and France, have already banned partnerships between bookmakers and sports teams. In England, Premier League clubs have decided to stop displaying gaming logos on their shirts until the end of the 2025-26 season.
Therefore, the Bundestag‘s decision is an important step towards keeping German sport financially healthy. While betting regulations are necessary, finding a balance that does not harm sports development is essential.
