In the world of sports betting, the narrative surrounding the ‘curse’ that hangs over Canadian rapper Drake gained a new episode.
Last Saturday (20), during UFC 297 held in Toronto (the rapper’s hometown), underdog Dricus du Plessis won the main fight of the event.
Who are the fighters?
The defeated champion Sean Strickland disappointed a lot of people, especially rapper Drake, who had bet around US$700,000, approximately R$3.5 million.
Sean Strickland, until then champion, has a history marked by overcoming. Born in California in the 1990s, Strickland faced financial difficulties and a tumultuous childhood. He was a frequent victim of psychological and physical abuse from his alcoholic father.
On the other hand, Dricus du Plessis, also known as “Stillknocks”, was born in Standerton, South Africa, in 1994, and began his career in MMA at the age of 16.
With an impressive record of 19 wins and just two losses, Du Plessis has knockouts, submissions and decision victories on his record.
Drake’s “curse” on sports betting
This isn’t the first time Drake’s ‘curse’ has affected the sports betting scene. Four months ago, the rapper bet $500,000 on Israel Adesanya’s victory against Hunter Strickland.
On that occasion, Strickland won. Before that, in November 2022, Drake had already ‘damaged’ Adesanya by betting 2 million dollars on the Nigerian fighter’s defeat to Brazilian Alex Poatan, who knocked out Adesanya.
In other words, the saga of Drake’s ‘curse’ in sports betting continues to intrigue fans and enthusiasts of the most varied sports, as he usually bets on boxing, MMA, football, basketball, American football, motor racing, among others.
The question remains: will the rapper continue to influence the results of the fights or is this a surprising coincidence? Jokes aside, the world of betting, like the UFC Octagon, always holds unpredictable twists and turns.
