The growing sports betting and online casino market in Brazil stands out, but attention is now turning to “Responsible Gaming”, especially among young people.

According to a Datafolha survey, 30% of Brazilians between the ages of 16 and 24 have already ventured into betting, revealing a significant presence of this age group in this scenario.

Regulation promotes Responsible Gaming

The sanction of the law by the Federal Government in December 2023, focused on the fixed odds betting market, highlights the need to protect so-called “vulnerable populations”. Thus, this includes minors, the elderly and compulsive gamblers.

The government response is manifested through the creation of public Responsible Gaming policies. The Ministry of Finance and Health are leading the initiative, seeking to establish a safe and healthy gaming environment.

Filipe Senna, partner at Jantalia Advogados and master in Gaming Law, defined Responsible Gaming as a set of policies that aim to guarantee a balanced relationship between players, bettors and platforms.

In other words, according to Senna, betting platforms must adopt measures not only as a legal requirement, but also as part of self-regulation.

Therefore, the focus is on creating a positive relationship with players, generating a more favorable public perception of the gaming and betting sector.

Challenges for the sports betting sector

The sports betting market in Brazil recorded a notable growth of 135%, contributing to economic development, increased revenue and job creation.

Therefore, responsible gaming emerges as an essential tool to balance industry growth with consumer protection.

Therefore, by implementing policies, actions and information to protect the young, old and compulsive gamblers, the government builds a solid, ethical and socially responsible industry.

Raising awareness about the benefits of this practice not only protects vulnerable populations, but also strengthens the reputation and success of the sector in Brazil.

“It is interesting to remember that, based on international experience and in other jurisdictions, policies relating to responsible gambling lead to a positive evaluation of public perception”, highlighted Filipe Senna.

“Consequently, they generate greater success for the industry, because the bettor, the player and society can understand that the relationship between the platform and this consumer is healthier, properly protected and endowed with honesty, reliability and transparency”, he concluded.
