Santos is taking internal measures after yet another case related to sports betting and club employees. The issue was raised after new developments of Operation Penalty Maximum II, which investigates a match-fixing scheme in matches of the Brazilian Championship.

According to the Public Ministry, defender Eduardo Bauermann received approximately 50 thousand reais to receive a yellow card in the game against Avai and, later, a red card against Botafogo.

The defender initially denied any involvement and continued carrying out his activities at Peixe. After the match against Audax Italiano, the player denied again. In a note issued on April 19, the Santos club took a stand in the player’s defense and claimed that it “fully trusted its athletes”.

With the latest revelations of the operation, Peixe completely changed his stance and requested explanations from the defender. After a meeting this Tuesday, 9, Santos chose to remove Bauermann from activities immediately.

According to Diário do Peixe, the club also sent an internal notification clarifying to employees the practice of sports betting, match fixing and Operation Maximum Penalty. In the middle of last year, Santos had to deal with another employee also involved in betting. On the occasion, president Andres Rueda called a press conference and announced the resignation of the Sereias da Vila goalkeeper coach, Fabricio de Paula, due to an attempt to entice a Bragantino player, in a 2022 Brazilian Women’s game.

According to information passed on by the teams, the player received the proposal by messages to allow her team to concede several goals in the first half. Bragantino, the athlete’s team at the time, reported the bribe, published a statement and clarified that the player refused the offer.

Weeks later, the goalkeeping coach sued Santos and president Andres Rueda, demanding that the club reveal how it got to the point of linking the case to match-fixing. Also according to Diário do Peixe, De Paula pointed out that Peixe did not even explain the issue to him.

The trial took place in August last year. The Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) decided to fine R$20,000 and suspend Fabricio de Paula for six months. The defense of the goalkeeper coach tries to annul the sentence in civil justice in Rio de Janeiro.
