Players involved in match fixing can be banned

Match-fixing has become a major problem in the Brazilian sporting environment. With the rise in popularity of sports betting – and the lack of adequate regulation to oversee and ensure the integrity of sports – there has been an increasing number of cases related to these practices.

The current government is already studying the regulation of the sector on an uninterrupted basis and in the next few days a provisional measure is expected to come out. Sports betting has been allowed in Brazil since 2018, but there has never been a debate about the rules for operating the modality.

The attorney general of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD), Ronaldo Piacente, gave an interview to the program ‘De Primeira’ where he stated that players who were involved in match-fixing practices could be banned from football. Check out the interview below!

The attorney general of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD), Ronaldo Piacente, stated in an interview with De Primeira that athletes who manipulate sports betting can be banned from football.

‘Can be banned from the sport’: “When this athlete gives or promises some advantage to another colleague, he can be eliminated [banned] from the sport and with a fine of up to R$ 100,000. If he harms the team he defends, with a yellow card, red card or deliberate penalty, the forecast fine is up to R$ 100 thousand and the suspension of 180 to 360 days. also with a fine of up to R$ 100 thousand. And, in case of recurrence, he can be banned from the sport”.

Message for the athletes: “The athletes are being denounced not only by the MP-GO, but by the Sports Justice, my message is that they stay alert. In addition to undue advantage, they will end their careers, they will be banned. In addition to having the name ax in the sport, because I imagine that no club will want to hire him. Think about it: it’s easy money now, but it will reflect on this athlete’s professional life.

Manipulation of football matches: “The Sports Justice is very concerned about this issue of match fixing. A priori, it was with those games with less visibility, but what scared a lot was this issue now with Serie A, B, C and A. This is reflected in all championships, it is very worrying even for the prevalence of competition, for fair sports play, for the seriousness and transparency of the competition.

I work with the PM-GO: “I’m working with the Goiás Public Prosecutor’s Office. We’ve been exchanging information and I’ve been talking to Dr. Fernando, who is head of Gaeco [Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime]. It has helped us a lot with information so that we can open inquiries and file complaints. We are fighting this manipulation of results”.

‘Stoppage is an extreme measure’: “For there to be a stoppage of the competition or challenge to the match, the act would really have to influence the result of the match. In Série A, for example, what we are noticing at first are issues of yellow cards and red. It is an extreme measure [stoppage of the Brasileirão], but provided for in the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD)”.

Stoppage injunction?: “Injunction, in principle, only when there is full proof, that ceases to be the suspicion. What we have are phone conversations, whatsapp, and based on that it is premature to ask for an injunction, but the clubs are already pushing these athletes away.”
