Super Bowl LVII breaks record and becomes the highest-volume sports event in the US

Super Bowl LVII, which took place on February 12, set a record and became the sporting event with the highest betting volume in the United States. According to GeoComply, a Canadian geolocation technology company, there were more than 100 million operations promoted in 23 states plus the capital Washington DC.

The amount corresponds to a growth of 25% compared to the 80 million transactions made the weekend before the end of the NFL season (North American football league).

In and around State Farm Stadium in Arizona alone, where the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs clashed, GeoComply recorded 100,000 transactions. This edition was the first to take place in a state where sports betting is considered legal.

Among the betting sites, FanDuel accounted for more than 2 million active bettors throughout the decision, reaching 50 thousand bets per minute. In the match, Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs managed a memorable comeback in the last moments and won by 38 to 35.

NFL season sees 77% growth in online sports betting

But, it is worth noting that the tendency of Super Bowl LVII to become the biggest in history in terms of bets placed was already predicted since the beginning of the season, which resulted in a 77% growth in online sports betting.

“Super Bowl LVII was a record-breaking event,” said GeoComply co-founder and CEO Anna Sainsbury. “GeoComply data reveals that Americans’ interest in legally betting on the Super Bowl has never been higher. It also showed that many fans at State Farm Stadium embraced their newfound ability to bet while watching the game in person.”

Now, the expectation is to reach an even more expressive mark in the next edition of the NFL final, which already has definitive headquarters. The next Super Bowl will take place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
