Recently, the XP Investimentos retail sector identified a possible unusual boost for retailers in 2024: the regulation of online betting.

All because the approval, at the end of 2023, of the bill in the National Congress that regulates sports betting and online casinos has just come into force in Brazil.

80% of online bets are R$100

A recent survey carried out by Futuros Possíveis, with around 1,600 participants in Brazil, revealed interesting data about the online betting scenario.

Thus, 36% of those interviewed have already ventured into this universe, with 78% doing so frequently or occasionally, with emphasis on the Northeast region of the country.

The figures involving expenditure in this environment are significant. The majority of bettors (80%) limit their bets to up to R$100.

Low-income bettors concentrate on smaller amounts, with around R$50 per bet.

In other words, according to a study by QualiBest, the average monthly value of bets is R$58. Therefore, it is estimated that bets in the Brazilian market are equivalent to approximately 1% of GDP, an amount between R$100 and R$120 billion.

Low-income families bet more

The impact of these bets becomes more evident when we consider the budget of low-income families. According to IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), around 22% of your earnings are allocated to discretionary expenses, totaling approximately R$286 per month.

With average monthly spending of R$58 on online sports betting, this represents approximately 20% of these families’ budgets.

However, recent regulation of the sector, together with the implementation of a 15% tax on earnings on these platforms, could change the outlook.

XP Investimentos’ view is that the tax on online betting will make these games less attractive to low-income users. This way, the money spent on games will possibly go towards retail consumption.

Portanto, a legislação para o setor de apostas no Brasil poderá refletir no desempenho do varejo ao longo deste ano. Afinal, os jogos online já estão gerando um impacto no mercado de jogos e nos hábitos de consumo de milhões de brasileiros.
