The gaming industry, recognized as one of the most promising globally, generates billions annually. Despite this significant growth, the sector faces significant challenges related to gender imbalance, an issue deeply rooted in its structure.

This dynamic reflects a broader reality in the market, where women continue to be underrepresented, especially in leadership positions. As evidenced by research by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), only 29% of management positions are held by women.

In response to this disparity, the Association of Women in the Gaming Industry (AMIG) emerged, created by six women with more than a decade of experience in the sector.

Its goal is to not only address these imbalances, but also promote lasting, inclusive and empowering cultural change for women in the gaming industry.

Its goal is to not only address these imbalances, but also promote lasting, inclusive and empowering cultural change for women in the gaming industry.

Despite the growing number of women in the gaming industry, there are still significant barriers to overcome to achieve adequate representation. Therefore, it is imperative to stimulate female interest in this ever-evolving field.

Ana Bárbara Teixeira, one of the founders of AMIG and a consultant in regulatory law, highlights the need to awaken this female interest:

“Although many women occupy prominent positions in the industry, we are still a minority, despite representing a considerable part of the market.”

“The challenge lies in awakening women’s interest in entering this industry, which often seems distant or unknown”, he adds.

AMIG’s initiative is inspired by narratives such as that of Ana Helena Pamplona, another founder of the association and lawyer, who felt the need to address the lack of gender equity in the gaming industry.

“The idea for AMIG arose from my concern as a lawyer and law professor regarding the development of sectors that neglect crucial aspects, such as gender diversity.”

“The gaming industry in Brazil is at an early stage, which represents a unique opportunity to build a sector with a focus on gender diversity”, adds Ana Helena.

Promoting gender equity in the gaming industry

The female presence in the gaming industry not only enriches the sector with diverse perspectives, but also drives innovation and creativity. Natalia Nogues, executive director of AMIG, emphasizes the importance of this diversity:

“By involving more women in gaming, the industry benefits from a variety of experiences and ideas that drive innovation. Gender diversity brings with it different ways of thinking, fundamental to the success of companies in the sector.”

Furthermore, the presence of women in leadership positions promotes a more inclusive business culture. Bárbara Teles, another founder of AMIG, highlights the importance of engaging the entire community:

“To achieve gender equity in the industry, it is essential to involve everyone, including men and other stakeholders. Companies’ commitment to gender diversity is essential to raise awareness of the importance of this cause.”

AMIG commitments

According to Luciana Hendrich, one of the founders of AMIG, the future of female participation in the industry is promising.

“With the gaming market on the rise in Brazil, we expect to see a significant increase in the number of qualified women entering the sector in the coming years, something that has already been occurring since 2018.”

AMIG is committed to empowering and developing female talent in the industry through a variety of initiatives, including mentoring programs, promoting female representation at industry events and collaborating with educational institutions.
