A resident of Florida, in the United States (USA), earned an estimated prize pool of BRL 7.7 billion by playing in one of the biggest lotteries in the country, the Mega Millions.

The results were released on Tuesday, 8.

In total, the jackpot is 1.5 billion dollars. That was the third-highest amount in all of US history, after accumulating for 31 straight issues.

Among the withdrawal possibilities, the winner can choose between receiving, for three decades, approximately 258 million reais per year.

The lucky person can still choose to receive everything at once, around 3.8 billion reais. However, this possibility secures only about half of the prize.

  • January 13, 2023: $1.348 billion;
  • November 8, 2022: $2.04 billion;
  • October 23, 2018: $1.537 billion; and
  • January 13, 2016: $1.586 billion.

How does Mega Millions work?

Even though it is known as the “Mega-Sena” of the USA, the dynamics of the Mega Millions differ from the version practiced in the Brazilian lottery.

When purchasing a ticket, participants need to choose five numbers between 1 and 70, and a sixth number called the Mega Ball, from 1 to 25.

The bettor must match the first five numbers. If he misses the golden number, he will not receive the main prize.

Also, the chance of the bet hitting all the numbers is one in 302.6 million.

The winner can choose how to receive the prize, there are two options: a single installment. But with a smaller amount compared to the total prize amount; or receive a fixed amount monthly for 29 years.

It is worth mentioning that the law in force in the United States does not prevent a person from buying a ticket and competing for the Mega Millions jackpot directly from Brazil.

This is because the rules do not prohibit a foreigner or a tourist from winning prizes in the lottery. Therefore, it is possible for any Brazilian to win the jackpot in the next draw.
