Exclusive Ian Cook from StoneTurn talks about the benefits of betting regulation in Brazil

Sports betting has been authorized in Brazil since Law 13,756 was sanctioned by Michel Temer in 2018. In these four years, activity has grown so much that one could not even imagine or quantify the number of bookmakers operating in Brazil today, with practically 100% of them sponsoring Brazilian football and moving billions of reais.

The problem arises with the non-regulation, which gives way for companies that are headquartered outside Brazil to remain abroad, causing the consequent ‘leakage’ of money from the country, in addition to the lack of control and manipulation in the results of sporting events.

In recent weeks, a considerable number of cases of alleged and proven fraud and manipulation in the results of Brazilian football matches have been seen, bringing to light discussions between players, bettors, consultants, businessmen and specialists in the subject.

What should be the role of sports associations? What mechanisms can be used for detection and prevention? How can money laundering happen through sports betting and how to combat these crimes?

About these and other issues, iGaming Brazil spoke with Ian Cook, Executive Director of StoneTurn, a consulting company in the area of investigations and compliance, which has worked a lot with the sports segment, offering preventive solutions such as reviewing and improving compliance programs and third-party risk analysis.
