After a shortened cycle due to the pandemic, the world must stop to watch the Olympic Games in France in July 2024. More than 10,000 athletes will compete in 32 disciplines. Sports betting on the 2024 Paris Games is expected to mobilize billions of reais in predictions on the most varied sports.
After an absurd growth in betting during the 2022 World Cup, the Paris Games should also heat up the betting market in Brazil.
IOC and sporting integrity
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is preparing for the biggest sporting event on the planet and investing in technology to preserve sporting integrity.
Since the Beijing Games in 2008, the Olympics have had an anti-manipulation system called Ibis (Intelligence System for Betting Integrity, translated from English).
According to an article in Jornal da Band, the mechanism accompanies both bookmakers and sports entities to monitor whether any move or game is outside the standards.
The expectation is that this care will be reinforced in Paris with the support of Interpol to promote fair and transparent competition.
Sports betting on the 2024 Paris Games and the French market
In France alone there are more than 4.5 million bettors who spend around 300 euros per year on bets. “The gambler, here in France, is quite young,” said Gabriel Silva, betting game consultant in an interview with Band.
“You can really see that all communication is oriented towards acquiring customers of this type, very linked to sport, football, mainly, everything that is an app, smartphone. The thing about being able to make money with knowledge about the sport has become fashionable”, he added.
It is worth noting that the sports betting market in France began to be regulated in 2010. Today, there are 15 bookmakers operating legally in the country and the sector is estimated at 7 billion reais.
Since 2020, a new regulatory entity has started to act on French soil. With legislation that continues to evolve, the local government intends to ensure that sports betting continues as a form of entertainment.
