Procon-SP-defende-protocolo-para-enfrentar-efeitos-nocivos-de-jogos-e-apostas-online

Representatives from Procon-SP presented a proposal for joint action with other consumer protection bodies to combat the harmful effects of online gambling and betting.

The initiative, supported by Senacon, Associação Procons Brasil, Procon Carioca and Fórum de Procons do Nordeste, aims to prevent over-indebtedness and pathological gambling disorder.

Procon-SP highlighted the need for an integrated approach to protect consumers. The protocol proposes that all entities of the National Consumer Protection System (SNDC) develop educational activities aimed at the practice of responsible gambling.

Furthermore, these entities must share problems faced by consumers and supplier practices, in order to support public policies and appropriate measures.

Justification of the initiative

The growth of online gaming and betting services justifies the creation of the protocol. With millions of Brazilian consumers involved and the advancement of digital technologies, the supply and advertising of these services has increased exponentially.

This expansion makes consumers more vulnerable, requiring effective State action to protect them. The signatories of the protocol believe that the integrated action of the State is crucial to guarantee effectiveness in consumer protection and defense.

Considering the vulnerability of consumers in the online gaming and betting market, a coordinated and well-structured approach is essential.

Growth in bets and complaints at Procon-SP

In April this year, Procon-SP monitored the growth of online betting and gaming, receiving complaints and improving its specialists. Thus, professor Hermano Tavares, from USP, discussed the financial and psychological risks of betting, highlighting the ease of access via smartphones.

Tavares suggested preventive measures such as blocking payments at specific times and limiting advertising to young people.

Finally, Procon-SP implemented a protocol to monitor betting companies, ensuring consumer protection in accordance with the Consumer Protection Code and Law 14,790/23. Thus, abusive practices and misleading advertising were highlighted as subject to administrative sanctions.
