Macau posted gross revenues of MOP$6.54 billion (US$817.3 million) for June 2021, an increase of 813% from the MOP$716 million recorded in June 2020.

This time last year, Macau registered the lowest total GGR since the beginning of the pandemic.

The June figure, however, is a 37% month-on-month decline from May 2021, where the GGR was 10.45 billion patacas. The numbers were released by the Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Department.

While June 2020 was the lowest point since the pandemic began, May 2021 was the highest, with the numbers coinciding with a five-day vacation in mainland China earlier in the month.

The pandemic still impacts business in Macau

The sequential decline was linked to a Covid-19 outbreak in Guangdong province in late May, with border restrictions tightening between Macau and mainland China, while mandatory quarantine measures were introduced on passengers arriving from parts of Foshan , Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

During the first six months of 2021, Macau’s GGR is now 49.02 billion patacas, an increase of 45% over the previous year period. It is the biggest annual change in 2021, surpassing the 29% increase in May.

However, April is the only other month this year to have witnessed a positive change from the previous year, with the 64% drop in January, the lowest rate of change so far.

Number of visitors to the country in April

Recently the DSEC (Statistics and Census Service) reported that arrivals to Macao in April increased by 5% month-on-month to almost 795,000 visitors.

It is also an increase of 7000% over the same period last year, as well as the largest number of visitors since the beginning of the pandemic, in February last year. However, the visitor count is still below the 3.43 million registered in April 2019.

The number that was the highest since April 2020, already indicated a slight recovery in the gaming and entertainment scene.
