The president of the Bets CPI, senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB – GO) revealed that the Minister of Treasury, Fernando Haddad, supports the restriction of betting on secondary events, such as yellow cards in football. Last month, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also defended this position.

Kajuru shared Haddad’s position during a CPI meeting. In other words, the minister supports the idea of prohibiting bets on factors that are not directly linked to the final result of the match.

Haddad and Lula are aligned on bets

In conversation with Senator Romário (PL-RJ), CPI rapporteur, Kajuru stated: “Haddad congratulated us on the position we both have on the issue of sports betting, where betting on yellow cards and red cards would be prohibited. , in manual throw, in corner, in penalty…”

“Anyway, you could only bet on the result of the match. Minister Haddad asked to let you know that he completely agrees with you and me. President Lula already agrees, let’s wait for the law decree.”

To date, the Ministry of Treasury has not commented on the matter. However, the ministry today announced an ordinance published in the Official Gazette, creating an interministerial Working Group (GT) dedicated to mental health and the prevention of gambling-related harm.

Bruno Henrique case and concerns about manipulation

The debate about betting on specific events gained strength after the involvement of famous players in investigated cases, such as Bruno Henrique, from Flamengo. He is accused of provoking a yellow card in 2023 to benefit betting schemes.

These cases reinforce arguments in favor of stricter regulations, aiming to reduce manipulation and ensure greater integrity in sport. Thus, Lula had already criticized similar practices, highlighting the need for changes to protect Brazilian football.
