The Ministry of Treasury is moving forward with the regulation of sports betting in Brazil. This Wednesday (4), a rectification of Ordinance SPA/MF No. 1,857 was published in the Official Gazette of the Union.
This measure brings adjustments to the transfer of bettors’ resources and data, ensuring a more effective transition to the new regulatory model.
From January 1, 2025, only websites with the “.bet.br” extension will be able to operate in Brazil. This new rule applies exclusively to companies located in the country. This change represents an important milestone for the sports betting market. Currently, most operators are located abroad.
What changes with the rectification of the Ministry of Treasury
The changes to the ordinance concern the sending of financial and administrative information from bettors to the new authorized operators. The main modification involves the identification of users’ resources in so-called “open bets”.
Check the settings:
- In Annex III, item 2, which deals with open bets on January 1, 2025, the responsibility for identifying resources passes from the sending legal entity to the receiving legal entity.
- The same occurs in Annex III, item 3, referring to open bets on February 28, 2025. In other words, the sending legal entity passes to the receiving legal entity.
- In Annex III, item 6, the final date for recording resources reverted to the Student Financing Fund (Fies) and the National Fund for Public Calamities (Funcap) was corrected. The date has been changed from June 31 to June 30, 2025.
These adjustments aim to ensure greater clarity and efficiency in the transition process to the new regulated model.
The regulation of the betting market in Brazil promises to bring several benefits. These include generating tax revenue, protecting bettors and promoting a safer and more transparent gaming environment.
In this way, the new model also seeks to put an end to currency evasion, as, until then, foreign companies dominated the sector. But now, with the requirement for headquarters in the country, the government hopes to consolidate a solid basis for monitoring and collecting revenue in the sector.
