The historic Tropicana Las Vegas casino hotel is scheduled to close on April 2, paving the way for construction of the Oakland Athletics baseball team’s new stadium on the famous Las Vegas Strip.
Thus, the Tropicana, one of the favorite places of Frank Sinatra and other artists, will be demolished to make way for the new sports development.
Tropicana leaves, another stadium enters Las Vegas
So, construction of the stadium is expected to begin in April 2025, after the closure and demolition of the Tropicana.
So Oakland Athletics owner John Fisher‘s plan is to build a stadium on nine of the property’s 35 acres. The estimated investment is 1.5 billion dollars.
However, those responsible have not yet released an approximate financing plan for the stadium. Likewise, it remains unclear where the A’s will play for three seasons after the lease ends at Oakland’s current Coliseum stadium.
It is also necessary to see where the team will play before the opening of the new facilities in Las Vegas, which is scheduled for 2028.
The team’s move from Oakland to Las Vegas considers the closure of the Tropicana a crucial step. State lawmakers approved a $380 million grant from Nevada taxpayers to partially fund the stadium project.
Bally’s Corp., operator of the casino hotel, is working to relocate its employees and make space for construction of the stadium. Tropicana employees may be eligible for other opportunities within the company or receive severance packages.
End of an era
The 1,500-room Tropicana, built in 1957, is one of the last major classic-era Las Vegas casino hotels to be demolished.
In other words, it is the end of an Era for the city of Las Vegas that is giving way to a new chapter with the Oakland Athletics stadium.
