The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), had a meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to discuss numerous topics, including the regulation of sports betting.

The proposed regulation of the sector is being processed in the Federal Senate after approval by the House Sports Committee. However, the project must be considered by the Economic Affairs Committee in the coming days, before advancing to the Plenary.

Sports betting regulation

This topic, although dealt with more specifically between Pacheco and Lula, is of great interest to the federal government, aiming to increase revenue.

Already approved by the Chamber, the proposal to regulate sports betting needs to be analyzed by the end of November.

“Only in general terms. Nothing specific. Let’s move forward in the Senate,” said Pacheco.

Future challenges in the Senate

Other topics covered were the progress of Tax Reform. Recently, the Senate approved a proposed amendment to the Constitution (PEC) related to this reform. Now, a new vote is awaited in the Chamber of Deputies.

According to O Globo, the president of the Senate spoke about the expectation that the PEC will be enacted later this year.

In addition to these issues, the government faces the challenge of preparing the Senate to vote on nominations for the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

These positions, vacant for more than a month, are awaiting nominations from the President of the Republic, which have not yet been defined.

Pacheco should prioritize project that legalizes casinos and bingos in Brazil

Furthermore, Rodrigo Pacheco stated that he should accelerate the progress of another project related to the gaming sector.

This is the project that provides for the Legal Framework for Gambling, that is, a proposal that regularizes other types of gaming in the country, such as bingos, casinos, slot machines, among others.

The text is in the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Senate. According to Pacheco, the rapporteur could be defined in November.

The Legal Framework for Gambling project was approved by the Chamber at the beginning of last year. But it faces stiff resistance from the evangelical bench.
