Origin of the phrase “Holla, the forest fairy”
Where does the expression that gave rise to the game Holla die Waldfee (Holla, the forest fairy) come from?
There are several explanations for how the forest fairy may have entered our vocabulary:
- The phrase could have evolved from the old “Hush, hush, forest fairy!” It’s a play by Oskar von Redwitz from 1859.
- The origin may also lie in the Grimm fairy tale “Frau Holle”. Frau Holle lives in the old man and embodies the spirit of nature.
- The phrase may also come from the time of herbalists who used the elderberry for medicinal purposes. “Holla” would then be derived from elderberry. Even today, elderberry is still called “Holler” in parts of Austria.
- It is also possible that the language simply arose as a humorous and unusual combination of words and has no historical antecedents.
In any case, “Holla die Waldfee” is now a well-established expression in German usage expressing astonishment or surprise and is used in many games on online gambling sites.
