Brazilian player Lucas Paquetá is being investigated by the English football association (FA) for alleged sports betting violations.
The West Ham football player, from England, was negotiating his transfer to Manchester City for 70 million pounds – about R$ 437 million at the current exchange rate.
After revelation of the investigation by the English newspaper “Daily Mail” and confirmed by GE, the negotiation was suspended.
Currently, the English federation is investigating bets made on accounts of people close to Lucas Paquetá. The sports bets would have been placed on a match in which the midfielder entered the pitch.
Another recent case involving betting and Brentford striker Ivan Toney should be highlighted.
He received an eight-month ban, a €50,000 fine and a warning about his future conduct for breaches of FA betting rules.
The player would have broken the laws aimed at the scope of betting for about 260 times.
Enforcement against player involvement with sports betting in England
In England, supervision against involvement of football players with sports betting is constant. Athletes cannot bet, whether or not they are in the betting games.
On April 13 of this year, the English league approved the withdrawal of sponsorships from bookmakers from the front of team shirts. Football clubs will have until the end of the 2025/26 season to do this.
The details of the investigation by the English football federation have not yet been released and in the next few hours, the FA should officially position itself.
Therefore, the current club of Paquetá is waiting for this announcement to understand how it will implicate the player and if he can be indicted by the authorities.
