Some clubs are taking preventive measures due to the unfolding of Maximum Penalty Operation, which investigates a game manipulation scheme with the participation of athletes and punters. Flamengo, in turn, promoted a conversation between Senator Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ) and the players from the professional squad. The theme was the sports betting PM and the cases that are being investigated.

According to a note from the Rio de Janeiro club, the rapporteur for the law that regulated the SAFs (Sociedades Anônimas no Futebol) in Brazil, Senator Carlos Portinho, was at the George Helal Training Center, at the invitation of the board, for a meeting with the players about the provisional measure ( MP) that will regulate the sports betting sector in the country.

Portinho, with vast experience in sports law, spoke for 20 minutes with the players on the topic that is shaking national football. The goal was to make the squad aware of everything that has happened in relation to Operation Maximum Penalty.

In addition, the board aimed to generate an analysis of the group on the topic, which has taken over the sports news in recent days. Invited to the conversation, Carlos Portinho was legal vice-president of Flamengo in 2002 and was also an athlete at the club.

It should be noted that the Public Ministry has investigated the case and more than 10 players have already been preventively removed from their clubs for having their names linked to the scheme. Some athletes have even had their contracts terminated with the teams.

Sports Betting PM

The Ministry of Finance recently presented the Sports Betting PM, sent to the ministries that co-authored the measure – Planning, Management, Health, Tourism and Sports. The intention is to guarantee more confidence and security for bettors, thanks to the transparency of the rules and supervision.

The PM establishes that only qualified companies will be able to receive bets related to official sporting events, organized by federations, leagues and confederations. According to a note from the Ministry of Finance, “the decision seeks to formalize an area of public interest, establishing clear rules and guaranteeing a new source of revenue for Brazil”.
