The Federal Supreme Court held, last Tuesday (12), the second day of the public hearing aimed at discussing the impact of online betting in Brazil. The event was attended by André Sica, partner at CSMV Advogados, who presented the “Joint Declaration of Brazilian Clubs” regarding betting regulation in the country. This note, which supports the project approved by the National Congress, was signed by 30 football clubs in Brazil.
Statement from Brazilian clubs
The clubs that signed the declaration include a diverse list of teams. Firstly, Cruzeiro, Fluminense, Botafogo, Palmeiras and Vasco da Gama stand out. In addition, São Paulo, Corinthians, Atlético-MG and Internacional also participated.
Grêmio and Juventude were part of the group, as well as Cuiabá and Athletico-PR. Other clubs such as Fortaleza, Bahia and Atlético-GO also joined. Additionally, Criciúma, Red Bull Bragantino and Vitória were present.
Teams like América-MG, Ceará and Avaí were not left out. Finally, Ponte Preta, Guarani-SP, Joinville, Vila Nova-GO, Brusque, Paysandu, Hercílio Luz and Barra FC complete the list.
These teams demonstrated support for the draft regulations, highlighting the importance of adequate legislation rather than bans.
André Sica emphasized the productivity of the audience, stating: “I understand that it was an extremely productive audience. Football managed to play its role and show its point of view, as it understands that all regulations can be better, but prohibition is never the way forward.
Football managed to show a very strong mobilization force. Through the space granted and the powers granted by Fluminense, we managed to gain the support of 30 Brazilian football clubs and issued a very strong statement, showing, in general terms, the position of the sector.”
Audience impacts and objectives
Convened by minister Luiz Fux, rapporteur of the Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADI) 7721, the hearing aimed to discuss issues related to the economy and mental health in the context of betting. The action that motivated the debate was filed by the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC).
Minister Fux highlighted that the main objective of the event was to clarify the impacts of betting on the Brazilian public. To this end, prominent representatives of national politics, influential football clubs, companies in the betting sector and lawyers specializing in the area were invited.
The hearing reflects the growing concern about the regulation of online betting in Brazil, emphasizing the need for an open dialogue to better understand the effects and propose solutions that benefit society as a whole.
