Tennis: Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka are favorites at the Australian Open

The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the tennis circuit this year, is in full swing in Melbourne. With the men’s and women’s singles tournaments reaching the round of 16, Betfair, a specialist in sports odds, has listed the favorites to win the titles in Australia. Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka appear to have the best chances of becoming champions.

In the men’s category, the expectation is that last year’s winner, 24-year-old Italian Sinner, will defend his title. He has a 48% chance of winning his third consecutive title in Australia.

Who can stop Sinner from winning their second championship?

The current world number 2 has four Grand Slam titles in his career so far, lacking only Roland Garros, where he lost in the final in 2025, to complete the list of trophies from the four biggest tennis tournaments in the world.

His biggest rival, according to Betfair, is the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. The current world number 1 is a two-time champion of the other three Grand Slams, but has never progressed beyond the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

At 22 years old, Alcaraz has a 29% chance of breaking his streak and winning in Oceania. The legendary Novak Djokovic, the most successful player in Australian Open history with ten titles and also the record holder for Grand Slams with 24, is in third place with an 8% chance of becoming champion again, now at 38 years old.

Daniil Medvedev, a three-time Australian Open finalist, has a 4% chance, placing him fourth. The Russian is followed by German Alexander Zverev and Russian-Kazakh Alexander Bublik, both with 3%. The

Also among the top ten with the best chances of leaving Australia with the title are Australian Alex de Minaur (2%), who plays with the home crowd in his favor, Americans Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Italian Lorenzo Musetti, all with 1%. The other tennis players still in the tournament have less than a 1% chance.
