The month of May marks the beginning of one of the main competitions on the world tennis calendar, the French Open, played on the courts of the Roland Garros complex in Paris.

The city, which will host the next Summer Olympic Games, will host the 56th edition of the tournament, which will have approximately R$300 million in prizes. Only the champions will receive R$13.5 million. Betfair has calculated the favorites to win the competition in 2024.

Carlos Alcaraz is the favorite at Roland Garros

Anyone who thinks that there would be no surprises in the first round is mistaken. Roland Garros’ greatest champion, none other than Rafael Nadal was eliminated by Alexander Zverev.

The Spaniard said goodbye early after being left out of the competition in 2023. However, it is another Spaniard who has the best chance of winning the tournament: Carlos Alcaraz.

Current number three in the ATP rankings, the young player has a 25% chance (odds of 3.3) of winning for the first time in Paris.

In the first match, he eliminated American JJ Wolf by 3 sets to 0. Therefore, the next clash is scheduled for this Wednesday (29) against the Dutchman Jesper de Jong.

Check out the main candidates to win the tournament in France below.

  • Carlos Alcaraz, with 25%;
  • Jannik Sinner, with 17%;
  • Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic, with 16% each;
  • Casper Ruud, with 10%;
  • Stefanos Tsitsipas, with 8%;
  • Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and Holger Rune, with 2% each;
  • Grigor Dimitrov, with 1%.

All other competitors appear with less than a 1% chance of winning the competition.

In the women’s category, Iga Swiatek is favorite to win for the fourth time

Current two-time Roland Garros champion and three-time winner of the tournament, 22-year-old Polish player Iga Swiatek is the candidate to win the tournament in 2024. Number 1 in the ATP ranking appears with a 55% chance with odds of 1.57.

This means that, for every R$1.00 bet, the bettor would receive R$1.57 if she really wins. See the list of the main candidates to win the Roland Garros tournament.

  • Iga Swiatek, with 55%;
  • Aryna Sabalenka, with 13%;
  • Elena Rybakina, with 10%;
  • Coco Gauff, with 7%;
  • Danielle Collins, with 3%;
  • Qinwen Zheng and Madison Keys and Jelena Ostapenko, with 2% each;
  • Ons Jabeur, Mirra Andreeva, Marketa Vondrousova, Victoria Azarenka and Jasmine Paolini, with 1% each.

But the representative of Brazil, Beatriz Haddad Maia, who was a semifinalist in the tournament in 2023, this year left the competition after being eliminated in the first round.

Brazilians broke record at Roland Garros

The 2024 edition was marked by the participation of the largest number of Brazilian tennis players in almost 40 years competing at Roland Garros.

The place has already been the scene of victories by Gustavo Kuerten (three-time champion 1999/2000/2001), Marcelo Melo (men’s doubles champion in 2015), Thomas Koch (mixed doubles champion 1975) and Maria Ester Bueno (women’s doubles 1960 and mixed doubles 1960 ).

In addition to Haddad Maia, Laura Pigossi, Thiago Wild, Thiago Monteiro, Felipe Meligeni and Gustavo Heide participated in the tournament. But, unfortunately, all Brazilian representatives were eliminated in the first phase of the competition.

The Roland Garros organization will distribute a total prize pool of 53.5 million euros (around R$300 million) in 2024.
