Online betting and gaming in Portugal generated €196.4m (£169.4m/$209.7m) in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in the first three months of 2023, according to the Regulatory and Inspection Service of Portuguese Games (SRIJ).
This was an increase of 24.8% compared to the same period in 2022 and a slight improvement of €195.3 million from Portuguese operations in the fourth quarter of 2022. Online sports betting totaled €85.7 million, while other activities online accounted for 110.7 million euros.
A total of €441.4 million was invested in sports betting during the quarter, a decrease of 3.8% compared to the fourth quarter of 2022, but a growth of 19.5% compared to the previous year. For other online bets, €2.97 billion was placed in bets during the quarter.
In relation to the sport with the highest number of bets, football took the lead, representing 70.6% of total sports bets. Bets on basketball and tennis combined accounted for 25% of the volume.
The SRIJ also disclosed that, on March 31, 2023, 166,300 players were registered on the Portuguese self-exclusion list.
Betting results on land games in Portugal
Land-based GGR – generated by casinos and gaming halls – totaled €65.9 million in the quarter, a 1.7% decrease from Q4 2022. However, it is up 22.2% year-on-year .
During the quarter, non-bank gaming – consisting of poker and bingo tournaments – generated €998,490 in GGR, up 50.3% year-on-year.
A total of €50.9m in GGR came from gaming machines, marking an increase of 15.9%, while the remaining €14m in GGR came from bank games – physical games that do not include poker and bingo.
