The French gambling regulator, l’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), reported that revenue from gambling in France reached €12.9 billion in 2022.
An increase of 20% compared to the previous year.
Online gaming generated €2.17 billion, €1.38 billion from sports betting, €442 million from online poker and €346 million from online horse racing betting.
The monopoly operators Française des Jeux (FDJ) and Pari-Mutuel Urbain (PMU) generated 8.2 billion euros of the total.
Meanwhile, land-based casinos and gaming venues generated €2.59 billion.
Casino revenue increased by 130% to €2.48 billion, and arcade revenue increased by 189% to €107 million.

ANJ’s annual report
In its annual report, the ANJ also highlighted its measures on gaming advertising and safer betting.
It noted that it took action after noticing an ad saturation during UEFA Euro 2020 in 2021, prompting operators to sign marketing commitment letters ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Earlier this month, the ANJ announced that it is working with the Professional Advertising Regulation Authority (ARPP) to review regulations for betting advertisements;
The ANJ said it will work with the ARPP to review French operators’ current advertising practices ahead of major sporting events, including the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the 2024 Summer Olympics, with a view to improving regulations.

The ANJ is an independent authority that reports to the French Parliament. Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin was appointed President of the ANJ by presidential decree for a non-revocable six-year term.
The Board is composed of nine members (five women and four men).
The ANJ regulates licensed gambling and betting (online, at points of sale and at racecourses). And, oversees the casinos’ responsible gambling policy.
In addition, the entity protects players, ensures that the legal offer of games is fair and recreational, combats illegal sites and money laundering.
