A resident of the state of Maryland, the man left home with the intention of placing a bet on the Racetrax game, a game he used to play. However, upon arriving at the chosen establishment, he realized that he would face a long wait to complete the bet.
Faced with the situation, he decided to change his plans. Instead of waiting in line, He opted to buy some scratch cards and return home. The choice ended up being a big surprise.
How a Simple Change of Plans Led to the Top Prize
The retiree visited a liquor store located in the city of California, in St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Initially, he intended to bet on Racetrax. However, the queue to place the bet was longer than I imagined.
Therefore, he decided to leave the traditional bet aside and buy four “20X the Cash” scratch-off tickets. Each unit cost US$5, equivalent to around R$25.
Once at home, he started scratching off the cards. On one of the tickets, he found the message “Take to Lottery”, which can be translated as “Take it to the lottery”. Without understanding the meaning of the information, he sought help to verify the result.
The retiree asked an employee to scan the ticket. Soon after, he received the news he didn’t expect. The winning card had guaranteed the scratch card’s top prize.
The amount received was US$50 thousand, an amount that corresponds to approximately R$251 thousand.
According to information released by the Maryland Lottery, the winner recently retired. He stated that he intends to use the money to pay off the mortgage on his own residence.
Furthermore, he stated that he will continue to participate in lottery games for fun. The store responsible for selling the scratch card will also benefit. The establishment will receive a bonus of US$500, approximately R$2,500, for selling the winning ticket.
