Senator Irajá (PSD-TO) declared on Wednesday (21), in an interview, that he has the necessary votes to approve Bill (PL) 2,234 of 2022, which seeks to legalize casinos and bingos in Brazil.

The Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) recently approved the project in a close vote, with 14 votes in favor and 12 against. The proposal will now be submitted to a vote in the Senate plenary, scheduled for the first week of September, during the concentrated effort of parliamentarians.

PL dos Cassinos close to approval

According to Irajá, the text of the Bill is now ready to be considered and voted on. He demonstrated confidence in the approval of the project, highlighting its importance for the country.

The senator stated: “I am convinced that we already have the votes to approve the project, which is important for Brazil.”

Irajá also highlighted that, among the countries that make up the G20, only Brazil and Indonesia have not yet legalized gambling. “Even Saudi Arabia, a Muslim nation, has already done this”, he commented, in reference to the advancement of regulation of this type of activity in countries with different cultural characteristics.

Impact of legalization and presidential sanction

The bill authorizes the installation of casinos in tourist centers and integrated leisure complexes in Brazil. Furthermore, it repeals the 1946 legislation that criminalizes gambling, a popular betting practice in the country.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has already signaled that he will sanction the new legislation if the Cassinos PL is approved in the Senate. This stance by the president reinforces the perspective that the legalization of gaming in Brazil is closer to becoming a reality.

In this way, the government signaled that it must do more to approve the proposal from now on.

Release of casinos in Brazil

It is worth noting that the market understands that the release of physical casinos, bingos, slot machines, horse betting and other forms of gaming is a natural step after the regulation of online betting. Thus, specific rules for sports betting and online gaming will come into force in January 2025.
