Representatives from the Ministry of Treasury and Abaesp (Brazilian Sports Betting Association) will meet with parliamentarians from the Betting CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on the Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting) on Tuesday (03).
The meeting of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) aims to investigate the manipulation of games and sports betting.
Betting CPI Meeting
The Betting CPI meeting is scheduled for 2:30 pm and will focus its discussions on financial transactions. Furthermore, participants will seek to develop mechanisms to curb suspicious activities, ensuring greater transparency in the sector.
This dialogue is essential to strengthen the integrity of sports betting in Brazil. The Prizes and Betting Secretary, Régis Dudena, will be present to provide crucial information about payment transactions linked to fixed odds bets.
As indicated by Senator Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ), author of the hearing request, Law 14,790 of 2023 establishes important guidelines.
Therefore, it is essential to ensure compliance with existing standards, as financial and payment institutions must comply with certain rules such as:
- Maintain records that allow authorities to monitor suspicious events
- Prevent possible money laundering
In the second part of the meeting, Rodrigo Alves, president of Abaesp, will explain the contribution of sports betting companies in preventing and combating match manipulation.
In other words, the request for a hearing, also originated by senator Carlos Portinho, aims to clarify the internal policies that govern the sector. The testimony will be essential to understanding how these companies collaborate with sports and judicial authorities to promote integrity in sport.
Portinho highlights the importance of exchanging information between entities to identify suspicious patterns in betting. Therefore, the main themes of the meeting will be:
- Sports betting market in Brazil
- Regulatory challenges faced by operators
Billions of dollars in the Brazilian betting market
Hundreds of betting houses hope to operate in Brazil and this is no coincidence. After all, everyone knows that the national sports betting market is one of the largest in the world.
Sports betting generates billions of dollars per year, according to recent studies. According to a Central Bank report, spending in the sector reached 54 billion reais in 2023 with online betting.
Furthermore, brokerage XP predicts that the market could reach between 100 and 120 billion dollars per year, highlighting its potential. These figures highlight the growth of the online betting sector in the country.
From January 2025, only companies accredited by the Ministry of Treasury will be able to operate in the national territory.
