Next Wednesday (14), Rodrigo Alves, president of Abaesp (Brazilian Sports Betting Association), will speak to CPIMJAE (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the Manipulation of Games and Sports Betting).

The testimony will take place at 2:30 pm. The hearing seeks to clarify how bookmakers work to combat and prevent the manipulation of sports results.

How sports betting companies collaborate with authorities

Thus, the request for this hearing, made by senator Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ), highlights the importance of understanding the internal policies and guidelines of these companies.

Portinho argues that Abaesp’s presence is “essential” for the Senate’s CPI to understand the role of sports betting in identifying and preventing fraud.

Then, during the session, Alves will explain how betting companies collaborate with sports and judicial authorities. The objective is to understand how information that identifies suspicious betting patterns is shared.

The betting market in Brazil is growing continuously and moves billions of reais annually. According to Senator Portinho, Brazilians spent around R$54 billion on online gaming and betting in 2023.

But a report from a private bank estimates that this number could reach R$120 billion per year. Therefore, this understanding is crucial to discuss the regulatory perspectives and challenges of the sports betting market in Brazil.

Federal District on Alert

On the same day, the CPI will also hear from Dayana Nunes, president of the Sociedade Esportiva de Santa Maria, in Brasília. She will provide clarification on the suspected manipulation of sporting results by the club’s players.

Two athletes are under investigation by the Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT) for allegedly manipulating the results of Candangão games, the Federal District’s football championship, this year. The investigations aim to understand the extent to which manipulation may have influenced the scores.

In addition to the hearings, the CPI will vote on five invitation requests for representatives of important bodies, such as the STJD and the CBF. These invitations are essential to help with the investigations and regulatory process of the sports betting sector.
