This Tuesday, the 27th, the sports betting CPI receives the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, and the secretaries of Consumer Affairs and the Ministry of Finance.

Deputy Aureo Ribeiro (Solidariedade-RJ), who asked for the hearing to take place, cited a report by Folha de S. Paulo. According to which “data from the Central Bank show that, in the first quarter of the year, 2.7 billion dollars (R$ 13.4 billion at current exchange rates) were sent abroad in sports betting”.

Still according to the report, “a little more than 1.7 billion dollars (R$ 8.5 billion) returned to Brazil in the form of payment of prizes to the correct ones”.

Ribeiro also wants to know if these betting companies are operating legally in the country by moving billions of reais and forwarding these resources to other countries. “These companies even operate by sponsoring almost all clubs in series A and B of the Brazilian football championship,” he added.

The National Consumer Secretary, Wadih Damous, in turn, should be asked about the measures adopted by the body to prevent consumers from being harmed.

The Special Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, José Francisco Manssur, who is currently responsible for the preparation of the draft enabling sports betting in Brazil, should speak about the uncertainties of the segment of these bets and games made available by these platforms.

“It is necessary to question what measures will be taken to avoid contamination of the national sports scenario, among other questions related to the legality of the platforms that operate in the country”, said Áureo Ribeiro.

The hearing will be held in plenary 10, starting at 2:30 pm.

The sports betting CPI is chaired by Deputy Julio Arcoverde (PP-PI) and reported by Deputy Felipe Carreras (PSB-PE). The initiative to create the collegiate stemmed from investigations carried out by the Public Ministry of Goiás that raised suspicions of manipulation in the result of four Serie B games.

Parliamentarians believe that irregularities have also been committed in matches from other series.
