Pennsylvania sports betting market hits $6.5 billion in betting in 2021

Pennsylvania online and retail bookmakers posted $750 million in sports betting and a record $127.6 million in online casino revenue in December.

According to PlayPennsylvania, the state also raised over $6.5 billion in sports betting in 2021, $122.5 million in sports betting tax revenue, and about $1.3 billion in online casino revenue.

During the last month of last year, Pennsylvania bookmakers accepted $750.4 million in bets, up 37% from the year before; however, December betting volume was down 2% from November.

December still generated $38 million in gross revenue for sports betting, down 16% year-on-year. After $19.1 million in promotional spending, bookmakers reported $18.8 million in taxable income and $6.8 million in state taxes and local stock valuations.

For the year, Pennsylvania online and retail bookmakers produced $6.5 billion in bets, an 83% increase over the previous year; $6 billion in online gambling, up 84% from 2020; $505.5 million in gross revenue, up 87% and $122.5 million in state taxes, up 79% from a year ago.

Pennsylvania’s Top Bookmakers

For the month, FanDuel led the online market with $246.8 million in bets. DraftKings followed with $204.7 million in stakes and BetMGM came third with $83.5 million.

Retail bookmakers accepted $57.1 million in bets for December, down from $57.5 million the previous month. Online casinos and poker rooms hit a record $127.6 million in gross gaming revenue in December, up 18% year-over-year.

In December, online casino games and poker rooms generated $102.1 million in taxable income, which yielded $42.5 million in state taxes and local contributions.

Pennsylvania was the second largest US market for online casinos in 2021, reporting $1.3 million in gross gaming revenue from online casinos and poker rooms (up 91% from 2020) and $466.4 million. million in state taxes.
