The Czech police launched a mega-operation this Tuesday (24) with the aim of dismantling a systemic corruption scheme focused on manipulation of results and fraud in sports betting.
As a result, authorities arrested 47 people linked to the football ecosystem, in an action that exposes serious integrity vulnerabilities in European sport.
The list of targets includes referees, club directors and the mayor of the city of Karviná, Jan Wolf, who is currently under investigation by the Olomouc Public Prosecutor’s Office.
How cooperation with Europol and Interpol mapped the fraud network
The siege of the criminal syndicate required an international tactical response.
The president of the Czech Football Association, David Trunda, confirmed that the fraud mapping lasted around three years and had direct support from Europol and Interpol.
The executive classified the operation as the likely biggest scandal in the country’s history and made a point of shielding the entity’s current management, highlighting that no member of the current board of directors is involved with the organization.
The execution of search warrants on several properties revealed the capillarity of the gang, made up of more than 40 active members.
The illicit betting scheme was not limited to the sport’s elite: investigators confirmed that corruption contaminated matches from the first to the fourth national division, even infiltrating the youth leagues.
The integrity alert
Among those detained in activity are two athletes from the first division: Samuel Sigut and Matej Hyble, both from Karviná.
The size of the current scheme exceeds in proportion the historic Czech scandal of 2004, when wiretapping brought down former leader Ivan Horník and exposed a massive bribery network in the country.
