Norwegian State Lottery reports thousands of winners in error

Norway’s state lottery company apologized to 47,000 players on Monday (30). The company mistakenly announced that all of them had won significant amounts of money in the lottery. However, the error occurred due to a currency conversion error.

According to an explanation from Norway’s state-owned Norsk Tipping group, last weekend the company published incorrect prize amounts following a Eurojackpot lottery draw held last Friday (27).

Apparently, the error occurred due to a calculation problem when converting the amounts from euros to Norwegian kroner. In the conversion, they multiplied the prizes by 100 instead of dividing them by 100, according to the group.

For Ole Fredrik, who was on holiday in Greece when he received a message from Norsk Tipping, and the company said he had won 1.2 million kroner (651 thousand reais).

“I thought, ‘Wow! It’s finally me? Is it true?’ I went to the Norsk Tipping website and it said in black and white, ‘Congratulations, you’ve won!'” Sveen told public broadcaster NRK. In reality, he had won just 125 crowns (£10).

47,000 players received a message by mistake

On Monday, he and 47,000 other players received a text message containing an apology from the company.

“The apology is no consolation. They should have sent it right after they made the mistake, not today,” he said.

The lottery authority has said it will open an investigation to see if gambling laws were violated. Culture Minister Lubna Jaffery has also called the mistake “totally unacceptable.”

The company’s chief executive, Tonje Sagstuen, resigned on Saturday amid the scandal, leaving it to vice chairman Vegar Strand to issue an apology.
