State representative suggests creating a lottery in Acre to strengthen revenue collection

Following the example of other Brazilian states, Acre could launch its own lottery. This way, the revenue could generate financial autonomy for the northern Brazilian state without increasing taxes, fostering priority areas for the population such as sports, youth, health, and social assistance.

Who suggested creating the Acre lottery?

During Wednesday’s session (29) at the Legislative Assembly of Acre (Aleac), Representative Eduardo Ribeiro (PSD) proposed this discussion on the creation and regulation of a state lottery. The measure, according to him, can contribute to increasing state revenue without the need to raise the tax burden.

The legislator recalled that the Supreme Federal Court (STF) had already ruled in 2020 that states have the autonomy to establish their own lotteries. He also cited the example of federative units that have already implemented the model, such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Paraná.

“These wealthy and powerful states within the Federation have already established their state lotteries. And the resources are reinvested for the benefit of the population in sports, youth, health, education, social assistance, and the fight against poverty,” the parliamentarian highlighted.

What would be the benefits for the state?

According to Eduardo Ribeiro, the matter had already been discussed by the State Treasury Secretariat, but he believes the issue needs to be revisited urgently.

“The state needs to open its eyes to this opportunity. After all, it’s a way to generate more resources, to encourage public policies without raising taxes, which is the last thing we want,” he stated.

Furthermore, the representative emphasized that regulating the state lottery would bring more financial autonomy to Acre, thus allowing for new social investments and the strengthening of programs focused on human development.

“We will explore the necessary avenues to regulate this, as other states have already done, for the benefit of our population,” he concluded.
