Government creates unified system to close accounts on betting sites

The Ministry of Treasury is developing a system for bettors to close all accounts opened with online gambling houses at once. The initiative is part of the working group created to reduce the impacts of betting on public health.

Unified self-exclusion system for sportsbooks

Today, every authorized sportsbook offers a self-exclusion tool on its website. The government, however, wants to unify this process so that users can close all accounts on different platforms simultaneously. This centralization seeks to offer greater control, as many bettors have accounts with multiple betting sites.

Another important aspect will be ad blocking. By activating this feature, users will no longer receive ads from platforms, so this measure should reduce stimuli that reinforce risky behavior.

The system has the participation of the Ministries of Treasury, Health, Sports and the Secretariat of Communication.

Prevention and training measures

The Ministry of Health will invest in training professionals from the Unified Health System (SUS) to expand care in cases of gambling addiction.

The Ministry of Sports, in turn, is preparing initiatives aimed at athletes. The idea is to provide training to clarify match-fixing and how to deal with betting during their careers.

Betting industry numbers

According to research carried out by O GLOBO/Ipsos-Ipec, 16.6% of Brazilian fans have already bet on football matches.

Data from the Betting and Prizes Secretariat (SPA), linked to the Ministry of Treasury, shows that 17.7 million people accessed authorized platforms in the first half of 2025. In the same period, authorities took down more than 15,400 illegal websites.

The survey also found that Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR), the gross revenue of authorized companies, reached R$17.4 billion between January and June. Brazil legalized sports betting and online gaming in 2018, during President Michel Temer’s administration, and the regulations came into effect in January of this year.
