This Thursday (03), President Lula will meet with ministers to discuss the payment methods available for online betting, the famous bets. Therefore, it is expected that the government will announce measures to protect bettors and conscious use of social resources, such as the Bolsa Família program.

Lula and five other ministers will be at the meeting on the betting sector

Among the participants in the meeting are the ministers of Treasury, Health, Sports, Civil House and Social Development. The initial proposal is to implement restrictions on the use of debit cards in transfers related to betting.

Experts say that the measure will benefit all users, not just those of Bolsa Família. In other words, the intention is to prevent the transfer of resources from the social program to betting accounts, avoiding misuse.

Recommendations from the Public Defender‘s Office will also be on the agenda. The orientation is that the measures adopted by the government are broad, without restricting only those who receive Bolsa Família.

The use of credit cards is already a common practice among bookmakers that operate regularly in Brazil, but they chose to go ahead and ban this option. Additionally, unauthorized platforms are being banned from the market.

Given the ban on the use of cards, the most viable payment method remaining would be Pix. This form of payment already represents around 90% of sports betting transactions.

Government can prepare a provisional measure

Therefore, one of the suggestions being debated is to establish limits on betting operations. Banks are proposing to temporarily suspend this functionality until full regulation is scheduled for January. However, this raises concerns about the impact on the functioning of betting.

The technicians involved in the discussions warned of the risks of making existing operations unfeasible. It is now up to President Lula to decide the guidelines to follow after the meeting that will take place in the afternoon.

Therefore, there is the possibility of a Provisional Measure (MP) that could adjust the current legislation on sports betting and online gaming in Brazil.

This Wednesday (02), the Ministry of Treasury published updated versions of the national and state lists of betting houses authorized to operate until the end of the year.
