The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), declared this Monday, 24, that he will install, this week, the CPI of sports betting. Lira will carry out the installation reading of the parliamentary commissions of inquiry (CPIs) of Americanas, the MST invasions and sports betting.

The parliamentarian stressed that the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), should read the CPMI of the coup acts in the coming days. However, the president of the Chamber assured that the other agendas of the National Congress will not be stagnant due to the opening of the investigation commissions.

“We will cherish the continuity of the agenda despite the progress of CPIs and CPMI”, declared Arthur Lira. In addition, the deputy stated that the urgent request for the Fake News PL will be considered between Tuesday and Wednesday and that the merits must be voted on by Thursday, the 27th.

Sports Betting CPI

The creation of the CPI of sports betting is due to an investigation by the Public Ministry of Goiás (MPGO). On February 14, the MPGO launched the Maximum Penalty Operation, which is investigating an alleged match-fixing scheme for matches in Series A and B of the Brazilian Championship 2022.

The investigation is being conducted by Gaeco (Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime) and by GFUT (Special Action Group in Major Football Events) and began in November last year. This case also served to accelerate the process of regulating the sports betting market in Brazil.

The proposal is from the federal deputy Felipe Carreras (PSB/PE) and has the support of the president of the House, Arthur Lira (PP/AL) and also of the federal government. If the sports betting CPI is really open, this will be the first under his presidency.

Carreras took on the task of collecting the necessary number of signatures to open the procedure because he is the president of the Parliamentary Front in Defense of Sport and has prior experience in issues related to sports betting. He acted as rapporteur for the National Gambling System and the update of the Pelé Law.
