The Future of Racing program brings together more than 100 startups and advances to a decisive phase in the United Kingdom

The Future of Racing program attracted over 100 startups in its initial phase and progressed rapidly ahead of the application deadline at the end of November. The initiative seeks to drive the modernization of British horse racing through technological solutions and new engagement models in the United Kingdom.

Launched in October, the program is the result of a partnership between the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and Flutter. This proposal is based on data from Project Beacon, considered the most comprehensive study ever conducted on horse racing audiences in the United Kingdom.

The survey identified structural challenges and pointed to opportunities to expand the reach of the sport.

The main event takes place in London and selects 11 startups.

The first Future of Racing event will bring together a select list of innovative technology startups. The companies will present their projects to a panel of industry leaders, Flutter experts, representatives from the BHA, racetracks, and equine welfare professionals.

The group will analyze each proposal in detail, seeking to understand the potential impact of the solutions on sport. Initially planned in a different format, the main day of presentations will take place in central London on February 10th.

The audience will be select and will include venture capital investors, representatives from the racing and betting industry, and sports investors.

In this way, startups will have a strategic platform to showcase their ideas. Furthermore, the program includes an additional event at York Racecourse as part of the Project Beacon initiatives.

In total, 11 startups were selected for the February presentation. Half of them focus their projects on equine well-being, with solutions ranging from gait analysis to terrain management.

Meanwhile, in the categories of race day experience, behind-the-scenes activities, and education, proposals are emerging that focus on fan engagement and the use of augmented reality to transform how the public interacts with the sport.

Why horse racing struggles to connect with the public.

The Future of Racing initiative also has the support of RMG, York Racecourse and ClimbUK. The program originated directly from Project Beacon, which identified a large untapped market for horse racing.

Although the sport ranks second in popularity in the UK, many consumers report a weak emotional connection to it.

In a survey of 7,500 people, Project Beacon highlighted three recurring concerns among race-goers. The study pointed to doubts about the welfare of the horses, the high cost of the races, and the difficulty in understanding the terminology and betting data.

Furthermore, many participants attribute success more to luck than to skill, especially among young people aged 18 to 28 and the Instagram generation.

To address these issues, the Future of Racing defined four main themes. The first deals with equine welfare, focusing on technologies that enhance horse safety. The second addresses education, by simplifying the sport for beginners.

The third theme involves the race day experience, seeking to increase the social and entertainment value of live events. Finally, the initiative focuses on backstage access, offering more immersive experiences to fans.

Leaders highlight the program’s potential.

Brant Dunshea, Chief Executive of the British Horseracing Authority, said: “It’s extremely exciting to have received so many entries for the Future of Racing Summit. This project represents a unique opportunity for the sport to embrace new ideas as we seek to secure future generations of fans, so to have such a positive response after the entry phase is very encouraging.”

Dunshea then explained: “I’m eager to learn more about the startups as this process continues, and the newly confirmed format gives us the opportunity to understand how sport can benefit from what they have to offer.”

Seb Butterworth, Flutter’s Strategic Director of Racing, said: “Our Alpha Hub team at Flutter has been working to promote the Future of Racing program to a broad audience of startups over the past few months, and we are absolutely delighted to have received over 100 exciting applications.

In addition, Butterworth commented: “This is a fantastic opportunity to understand new ways to boost British horse racing and answer important questions raised by Project Beacon.”

Finally, the executive concluded: “I am very much looking forward to exploring these concepts in more detail as the program progresses through the interview process and toward creating a shortlist for the presentation day in February.”
