This Saturday (30), two Brazilian teams will make history. Botafogo and Atlético Mineiro will compete in the final of the Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores 2024 in Buenos Aires. A Betfair survey brought surprising data about national preference:
- 38.52% of respondents choose Botafogo as their favorite team,
- 28.89% support Atlético Mineiro,
- 32.58% do not have a specific preference.
Choosing rivals
Surprisingly, Botafogo‘s rivals support the Rio team. Among Flamengo fans, 39.93% declared support for Alvinegro, while this percentage was 54.24% among Fluminense fans and 61.64% among Vasco fans.
In the state of Minas Gerais, Atlético Mineiro faces challenges with only 6.17% of local fans supporting the team. However, other fans show greater support: Grêmio with 75% and Athletico-PR with 66.67%. Atlético-GO fans appear as Botafogo’s biggest supporters, with 66.67%.
Betfair betting market for the Libertadores 2024 decision
In the betting market, Botafogo leads with a 44% chance (odd of 2.15) of winning the Libertadores 2024. Consequently, Atlético Mineiro appears with 25% (odd of 3.75). The possibility of a draw is 31% (odds of 3), according to Betfair.
Regarding the format of the competition, 47.16% approve of the current single-game model. However, 46.44% prefer the round trip system. Approximately 6.39% had no opinion.
The influence of the fans on the players was analyzed in detail, a total of 39.6% of participants completely agreed that the presence of the public increases the pressure on the players.
Furthermore, 44.28% of those interviewed partially agreed with this statement, indicating a significant perception of the impact of the fans. However, 6.66% of participants remained neutral regarding the influence of the fans.
On the other hand, 6.39% disagreed with the idea, while 3.06% completely disagreed, demonstrating a diversity of opinions about the role of the public in games.
Financial fair play and audience
As for financial fair play, 74.26% of fans support its implementation and 24.21% completely agree that Brazilian teams have a financial advantage. However, 34.65% partially agree. On the contrary, 20.97% disagree, 7.74% completely disagree and 12.42% neither agree nor disagree.
The possible reduction of vacancies for Brazilian teams generated controversy, with 67.33% being against any reduction, while only 32.67% would be in favor.
Regarding the audience, 62.47% would watch the final even without Brazilian teams. Likewise, 70.39% say they always follow the finals, regardless of the teams. In other words, the data demonstrates that Libertadores transcends clubism.
The survey interviewed 1,111 Brazilians. Residents of the Southeast were interviewed, aged over 25 years, 54% men and 46% women.
