The Sports Betting CPI approved, this Tuesday, 13, two invitation requests to receive the president of the Central Bank (BC), Roberto Campos Neto, and the Minister of Sports, Ana Moser.
The commission members want to hear the two authorities on the modality of operations carried out by bookmakers, which operate in the Brazilian market, moving billions of reais and practically without paying taxes due to the lack of specific regulation.
Parliamentarians also aim to discuss recent facts and episodes involving a match-fixing scheme in Brazilian football matches. As these requests are by invitation, both Campos Neto and Moser are not required to attend. If they were summoned, both would have to go to the committee.
In addition to approving these invitations, the CPI of sports betting received the president of the Goiás Football Federation, Ronei Ferreira de Freitas, the president of the Football Referees Union of Goiás, Paulo Cézar Ferreira de Almeida, the former president of the Union of Referees of Goiás, Cleyton Pereira dos Anjos and the president of the Union of Professional Athletes of the state of Goiás, Júlio Cesar Garcia.
Eduardo Bauermann obtains habeas corpus from the STF to avoid sports betting CPI
It should be noted that there was also a call-up request, approved on May 30, during a commission session, calling defender Eduardo Bauermann, from Santos, to provide explanations on the case involving game manipulation this Tuesday.
However, Minister André Mendonça, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) granted habeas corpus and justified that “no one is obliged to incriminate himself”. With immediate effect, the player justified himself and did not attend the session of the sports betting CPI.
In the case of Eduardo Bauermann, he was already judged by the 4th Disciplinary Commission of the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) on June 1st. At the time, he received the lightest sentence among the players involved in the scheme: 12 games away.
However, he remains away for an indefinite period from the activities of the Santos club, waiting for the unfolding of the investigations in the common court. But, the votes happened in the first instance. Therefore, the decision can be appealed to the full STJD.
