After the departure of Cuca, who resigned after qualifying for the Copa do Brasil, Corinthians is looking for a new coach for the 2023 season. According to Betfair, a bookmaker, the experienced coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, 70 years old, is the favorite to take office, with a 44% chance of being chosen.
Vanderlei Luxemburgo, born in Rio de Janeiro, is one of the most successful coaches in the history of Brazilian football, having won 24 titles throughout his career, including five Campeonato Brasileiros for four different clubs. He is also the manager with the most victories in the history of the Brasileirão, having won 350 matches. Luxemburgo had a controversial passage as coach of Real Madrid, but his last job was at Cruzeiro in 2021, where he stayed just five months before terminating his contract.
According to Betfair’s analysis, the second favorite to take charge of Corinthians is Tite, former coach of the Brazilian national team. Tite is a Corinthians idol, having won six titles with the club, including the Libertadores of America and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2012.
However, in an interview with Betfair, world champion Rivaldo expressed his belief that Tite’s return to the helm of Corinthians is not close to happening at this moment: “I have doubts about his return as he announced that he intended to spend at least a year resting after his departure from the Brazilian national team. So I don’t see this scenario as being so easy to happen”.
Rivaldo also mentioned about the coach’s ambition: “In addition, I believe that he also wanted to train outside Brazil, so I don’t know if this idea of returning to Corinthians would be in his plans at that moment. In any case, it would not be a surprise for him. I would like him to consider this break period to be able to embrace a project at Timão again, where he was already very happy”.
