The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced, this Wednesday (4), a severe punishment for the Brazilian tennis player Gustavo Tedesco.
The 21-year-old athlete, originally from Caxias do Sul (RS), was banned from the courts for two years and three months, in addition to receiving a fine of 15 thousand dollars.
What happened
The investigation concluded that Tedesco manipulated the score of three matches between September and November 2022, in addition to facilitating betting schemes.
The player chose not to appeal the sentence. With the penalty retroactive to January 24th, he will only be able to compete again on April 23rd, 2028.
Discreet career
Gustavo Tedesco’s performance on the professional circuit was modest. The tennis player from Rio Grande do Sul lost all six matches he played, the last of which was in October 2023 against Daniel Dutra Silva.
In doubles, he won only one match out of seven attempts, reaching position 1994 in the world ranking.
Russian also suffers punishment
In the same statement, the ITIA announced the suspension of Russian tennis player Gyulnara Nazarova.
At age 27, she received a four-year ban and a $10,000 fine.
Nazarova was accused of attempting to bribe another player in 2019 and, for not responding to the accusations, was automatically suspended until January 2030.
Football player reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Problems with match-fixing and betting have also occurred in football.
On January 30th, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS), through the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (GAECO), filed a formal complaint against a former Juventude athlete.
The accusations against the player are serious: fraud in sports competitions and money laundering.
GAECO indicates that he attempted to conceal more than R$ 1.9 million received from accounts linked to sports betting.
