Sports betting is growing again in Portugal and will exceed €500 million in the third quarter of 2025

The volume of online sports betting grew again in Portugal in the third quarter of 2025. Portuguese consumers wagered €504.6 million, according to the quarterly report from the Portuguese Tourism Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ).

The result surpasses the €483.4 million recorded in the same period of 2024. Furthermore, it represents the highest quarterly volume of 2025, after the €501.9 million of the first quarter and the €457.3 million of the second.

Why did sports betting volume increase in the third quarter of 2025?

Third-quarter performance consolidates a year-on-year growth trend in the online sports betting market. In 2024, Portugal reached its highest volume ever.

Furthermore, the volume between July and September is the fourth highest ever recorded. This amount is surpassed only by the €573.9 million of the first quarter of 2024, the €533.7 million of the fourth quarter of 2024, and the €532.1 million of the same period in 2023.

Annual growth also remains consistent. In 2024, the volume exceeded the 2023 total by €331.6 million. Compared to 2022, the increase was €500 million.

Gross revenue falls despite increased volume.

Despite the growth in the volume of investment, the sector’s gross revenue showed a decline in the third quarter of 2025. The value reached €99.7 million, falling short of the €114.9 million in the first quarter and the €109.2 million in the second.

The data is included in the third quarter 2025 report from the Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service of Turismo de Portugal, which highlights the difference between the volume of transactions and the financial return during that period.

Football maintains its leading position among betting options in Portugal.

Once again, football led the preferences of bettors between July and September 2025. The sport accounted for 71.8% of sports bets, while tennis came in at 22.1%. Other sports, not specified, totaled 6.1%.

In football, the Portuguese first division and the Champions League emerged as the most bet-on competitions, with 11.4% and 9.3% respectively. In tennis, bettors focused mainly on the US Open and Wimbledon, both Grand Slam tournaments, which accounted for 14.9% and 12.1% of bets in that sport.
