The Ceará State Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPCE), through its Criminal Investigation Unit (Nuinc) and with support from the Civil Police, conducted Operation Minefield. The operation served a search and seizure warrant against a player under investigation for suspected match-fixing in a 2024 Ceará State Championship Series C match.
During the operation, agents seized a cell phone. The measure was authorized by the 7th Regional Custody and Guarantee Unit.
Federation filed a complaint about match-fixing
The investigation began after the Ceará Football Federation (FCF) filed a formal complaint. The organization received reports from a company specializing in sports integrity.
According to the documents, highly suspicious betting patterns indicated an unusual focus on the player’s team losing, even in the first half of the match.
Furthermore, reports indicate that the athlete intentionally handed the ball to the opponent, with the score still at zero. The match referee recorded the incident in the Match Report (RDJ) and considered the incident serious.
As a result, the action generated indignation among teammates, who even considered leaving the field in protest.
NUINC had already conducted a similar operation on May 9th of this year. Since then, the agency has intensified its investigation. Investigators are now seeking to identify and hold accountable others involved. The Ceará Public Prosecutor’s Office reinforced its commitment to the integrity of competitions and the direct fight against corruption in sports.
Operation name and symbolic meaning
The name “Minefield” reflects the complexity of the investigation. The investigation affects not only sports ethics but also the trust of the public, athletes, and institutions.
Symbolically, the playing field, which represents loyalty and competitiveness, was distorted by actions designed to artificially alter the outcome. Thus, the sports environment became, figuratively, a veritable “minefield.”
