Data from the Ministry of Treasury indicate that, between October 2024 and March of this year, the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA), a department linked to the ministry, has already ordered the blocking of 12.5 thousand domains of illegal betting sites in Brazil.

Currently, the department is evaluating 203 requests from companies seeking authorization to operate fixed-odds betting in the country.

Considering the definitive and provisional authorizations, today, 70 companies are able to operate in the country. According to the legislation, each of them can have up to three different domains (betting sites).

60 companies were granted definitive licenses, valid for five years. However, there are currently 62 licenses, since two of them have two authorizations each. Also in accordance with the regulations, an advance payment of a fee of R$30 million is required to obtain the license.

Betting sector raises more than R$2 billion

In this scenario, with companies regularized through an administrative act of the Ministry of Treasury, through the SPA, the government collected R$2.16 billion in concession payments from the betting sector.

The online betting market in Brazil began operating in a regulated manner on January 1, 2025. Now, according to current legislation, to operate legally at a national level, betting companies must follow a series of requirements.

Among them are determinations such as the use of the “.bet.br” domain and the identification of bettors through their CPF, in addition to facial recognition.
